Sunny Days, Making Days...

Last week at the local flea market I came across a few lovely bits of vintage crochet and linens.  A lady was selling lovely little bundles tied up with string.  When I got home I untied them and found a few treasures....

There were several lovely pieces of old linen part embroidered and this led me to ponder on what I could make with them.  I love hand embroidery and always embellish my work myself.  However there was something about these linens that inspired me.  I decided to try and use them to make some new work.

A making day was arranged with Gill P for Friday.  We sat in the sun in Gill's lovely back yard amongst pots of geraniums, hanging baskets, lanterns and fairy lights, happily sewing in the sunshine.  A lovely lunch of home made quiche and salad followed by a chunk of chocolate cake. Gill was making a purple frayed fairy.  I decided to cut into my lovely linens and started to layer them on top of each other with hand dyed vintage linen in shades of ochre in between.

I am hoping to make a few more of these vintage style brooches - not a piece of lace in sight.  I will leave you with an image of a cuff I am working on in shades of ochre, again a work in progress...

Until next time........ hope the sun is shining where you are. Jayne x

Back to the very beginning.......

I have been neglecting my blog of late.  A nasty flu type virus is my excuse.  I could just about manage to download an image to facebook but composing a post was beyond me.  However, after two weeks I am feeling a bit like my old self again.

I decided to revisit a technique I learnt in my first year at College.  I do enjoy making felt and adding other elements whilst laying out the fibres.  I have been asked to make some small pictures using the techniques I use in my corsages and wristcuffs.  I have never made a picture before so I created some tiny fragments that I could work into with embroidery and maybe some beading.....

I have not been out and about and have missed my visits to my local charity shops.  I found these little gems yesterday, in all my favourite colours.....

I love an old bobbin of thread with an interesting label

lovely crochet trims - the dye pot beckons!

and finally a lovely bag of buttons and old blanket labels - a gift from Gill P - thank you Gill!

I hope you all have something interesting and exciting to work on at the moment.......

p.s. Emily and I have been decorating this week, she is blooming, tired but well.  Only five weeks to go....  until next time Jayne x

Christmas is going..........

A lovely Christmas day was had in the Hewison household. All the preparations, choosing, making & wrapping gifts, came together to create a day filled with happy memories.  All too soon it was time for
the tree and decorations to come down, and the cards to be recycled.  The festivities are over for another year and were enjoyed by one and all.

There is something so special about a handmade gift and I was lucky enough to receive some lovely treasures from friends.  Gill P made me a felt needle case, embroidered with a lovely sentiment......

a perfect holder for my selection of needles

A lovely set of metal lantern fairy lights were given the Gill W treatment, she hand painted each and everyone black to match my decor.  They will be adorning my wooden twigs in the hall soon.

An unexpected gift arrived beautifully wrapped in baroque tissue adorned with satin ribbons, roses and feathers.  It was from the owner of the shop I supply in Harrogate, in appreciation of my work, such a lovely gesture.  I opened the beautiful parcel and inside was this stunning Sophie Digard crochet scarf in shades of grey, duck egg, cream, pink and peach.  It is made from merino wool and is so soft and comfortable to wear.

I am happy to report that the wrist cuffs I made for the Gill P and Gill W were received with delight so I can now show you images as they are now with their owners.

Gill P's request was for pinks and purples

Gill W's request was for coral, terracotta and sludge greens

I hope you all had a wonderful festive period and wish you all a very happy, healthy and prosperous new year.  Until next time......... Jayne x

Celebrations of a Wedding and Birthday kind!!!

My posts have been a bit few and far between lately as I have been busy working on orders and a lovely wedding commission.  Here, as promised is birthday pressies part II.....

I really am a very lucky girl....... and so to Imogen's Wedding.  I met her at Harrogate Home & Gift such a lovely girl, so bubbly and chatty.  She commissioned me to make a bridal cuff and hair corsage for her September wedding.  She chose several elements from my cream neckpiece which was on display at the show.

I started by sorting lace and silks and then making some merino wool felt.....

A trip to the post office this afternoon and Imogen's commission is winging its way to her as we speak, it has been a pleasure to make something that is part of such a special day, a real privilege, I do hope she loves them.........    jayne x

Serendipity and being in the right place at the right time...

It was indeed a happy accident when I went to my local flea market a few weeks ago.  I always meet my daughter for coffee and shopping on a Saturday morning and then sometimes visit the market in the afternoon.   Em had to work so I decided to visit early morning.  The moment I arrived at my favourite stall the owner Steve was placing a box of linens on the table.  We chatted about the contents and then he suggested I buy the whole box!  Two Morrisons' carrier bags stuffed to the gunnels later, I was the proud owner of lots and lots of vintage linens, lace and what appeared to be garments.  They were in a very sorry state, presumably stored for a long period of time.  I knew a lot of t.l.c. would be required to bring them back to life.  Some were not too bad although the fabric condition was poor.  One such item was a delicate pink silk jacket modelled by the lovely Betty ...

Betty wearing lace trimmed silk under-garment with a delicate ribbon

It took a long time to bring some of the pieces back to a usable condition.  Soaking, washing, soaking again using many types of detergents, vingegar, lemon juice, I tried them all!  The downside of this is you lose some of the fabrics especially the silk.  I often think it is the dirt that is holding it together!  However,  I am the very delighted owner of 32 vintage garments including bloomers (yes!) very well worn and patched (I know too much information!), camisoles, under-skirts, modesty panels, jackets - most incredibly small, one or two pieces very large.  I estimate half of them will be usable as they are, the rest are so damaged I will use all the lace, fabric and trims.

Betty modelling what I think is a modesty panel - perfect condition

There were some lovely undergarments with beautiful hook and eye fastenings.  One particular camisole although very badly worn has some exquisite pieces I can incorporate into my work, not one thing will be wasted!

One of my favourite pieces is this tiny tiny waistcoat, a very unusual colour, not sure if it is the original one.  It is sooo gorgeous close up, such fine detail.

It fits where it touches!

Just had to show another photograph of the waistcoat as it is so lovely close up - it has to be seen to appreciate the beauty.

The little circles at the top are like tiny buttons

and last, but not least, a brassiere made of cotton, it has the initials W. R. and Whalonia reg'd on a label.  It looks like it has had whalebones in but they have been taken out and the slits hand sewn down.

think Betty a bit lacking in the bosom department!

six lovely pockets for the whalebones

Oh, nearly forgot to show you the bloomers, very well worn, patched and darned, a lovely shade of dirty white!  Lovely deep broderie anglaise trim with slotted ribbon redeem them somewhat.

Bottom only view to protect Betty's modesty!

Today my friend Gill and I have had another of our making days.  The sun was shining, we sat in the garden, me with my dye pot on the patio, Gill making lovely woollen heart hangings and leaf brooches.  We chatted in the sunshine, eating home-made egg and tomato sandwiches, grapes and lots of cups of tea.  The bloomers, brassiere and modesty panel have been dyed and then re-dipped as I didn't like the colour (too purple) and have been hanging on the line drying in the afternoon sun.
I am pleased with the result a sort of greyish purple/pinky colour.  I am intending to deconstruct and reconstruct some of the garments, to create contemporary wearable pieces.  I will leave you with a couple of photographs I took this morning as I saw that my Himalayan blue poppy was about to lift its little head up to the sun....

nearly there!

just about, but not quite!

Hope the sun shines on you this week!  Jayne xx
